Dear Friends,
An unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe hit the coastal communities around
the Indian Ocean.
The massive scale of undersea earthquake and tsunami resulted in untold
chaos and devastation in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, and Thailand. Contaminated
water by dead bodies of humans as well as of animals is threatening the
spread of epidemics.
As of January 5, 2005, Medecins du Monde ( Doctors of the World) has deployed
51 physicians, nurses, psychologists and logisticians to Sri Lanka and
Banda Ache (Indonesia) to provide emergency aid to the victims, to restore
health care systems in the disaster-hit zones, and to reduce the growing
risk of epidemics.
In Sri Lanka, Medecins du Monde teams are providing aid in both Tamil and
government-controlled areas, including Colombo, Galle, Batticaloa, Mullaittivu
and Trincomalee.
