In Indonesia, our teams are concentrating their efforts in Banda Ache,
which was severely damaged by the tidal waves due to its proximity to the
epicenter. This northern region on the island of Sumatra remains difficult
to access and numerous zones remain out of reach of aid workers and relief
goods, worsening the recent estimates already woeful of the destruction
caused by this emergency (more than 100,000 deaths, 500,000 homeless, 900,000
children in danger, 100,000 destroyed houses and only one hospital spared).
In addition to emergency medical relief, each Medecins du Monde team is
assessing the situation on the ground to establish priorities for further
aid, and to enable a rapid response to new crises including the outbreak
of disease. Our teams are distributing chlorine kits and food, setting
up shelters for displaced families, establishing medical care units, vaccinations
as necessary… all this, to avoid new losses of human life.
During these difficult times, nothing is more important than to react rapidly.
Let us together help millions more disaster-affected populations rebuild
their normal life.
Thank you for your generous donation, and for being a part of our relief
effort. |
