Oka Shikanosuke : Variations in Serenity |
 |
During his stay in France in the 1920's, Oka (1878-1978) developed a figurative
style that is more European than Japanese.
He preserverd after his return to Japan in 1939 and, similarly remained
committed to certain themes : the sea, the snow, flowers, castles and catherdrals,
and landscapes.
The paintings are arranged thematically, and close examination show that quasi-similar works were in fact painted at long intervals.
